Our Services

Services offered at the health center include:

Depending on your location, preference, and the nature of your problem, we will work with you to schedule the best type of appointment to meet your needs. Office visits may be at either our Hilltop/Main Campus or Capitol/Law Campus location. Virtual visits, also known as eVisits or Telehealth appointments, can be conducted via the MedStar video platform.

Depending on the nature and urgency of the problem as well as the availability of appointments, students may be given a same-day appointment with a provider in the clinic or as a video visit. Students are guaranteed an appointment within 24 hours during the weekdays.

We provide complete physical examinations for study abroad, scholarships, sports, or employment as well as gynecological examinations and immunizations (e.g. required, routine, and travel purposes).

Complete physical examinations may include routine blood work, preventative health counseling, and asymptomatic sexual transmitted illness (STI) screening. A routine well-woman exam consists of a general evaluation of menses, a breast exam, and a gynecological exam including a PAP smear (if indicated). The Student Health Center offers chaperones during all sensitive exams. For most insurance plans, appointments for preventive examinations will only be allowed once every 12 months.

Please make a separate appointment for any other specific concern or complaints.

Students with prescriptions from home can have refills provided by the Student Health Center only after consultation with a SHC provider. Students who are interested in new prescriptions can also make an appointment with a SHC provider for new medication initiation. Please see our policies below regarding specific medications.

If you need refills of a medication prescribed by an SHC provider, please send a message in the MedStar portal requesting your specific medication and the pharmacy where you would like it sent. When a request is received, your provider will review your record and determine whether it is medically appropriate to refill your medication.

Depending on the medication and/or the condition being treated, you may be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment or complete testing prior to your medication being refilled. We do not review routine refill requests after-hours or on weekends. Please consider the time it takes for us to receive the request and evaluate your record when requesting refills.

We would prefer that you use the MedStar portal to request your prescription refills. It is very difficult to assess your medication needs on our end when a pharmacy sends us a prescription on your behalf. Some of these requests are automatically generated from the pharmacy and do not necessarily need to be refilled.

For detailed information and policies regarding specific medications see below:

ADHD/ADD Medication

If you are seeking a prescription refill for a medication to treat ADHD or ADD that has never been provided before by the SHC, please read the Process to Obtain Prescriptions for ADHD/ADD from either CAPS or SHC. You will need to provide the documentation listed in the policy above prior to your appointment. Refills will not be provided until you are seen and all documentation is reviewed. We will require that you agree to and sign the GUH Student Health Center and GU Counseling and Psychiatric Services (SHC/CAPS) Psyco-Stimulant Policy and Patient Contract.

Once you have established care with the SHC and are able to get ADHD/ADD prescriptions with us, we will be able to prescribe your medicines one month at a time. We recommend that students make follow up appointments with the same provider on a monthly basis to continue this treatment.

Hormonal Medicine Prescription

As a Catholic and Jesuit Institution, the Student Health Center can prescribe hormonal prescriptions if medically indicated but not solely for contraception. Some examples of medical indications are: acne, irregular periods, heavy periods, cramps, and polycystic ovary syndrome. We can prescribe several different hormonal modalities.

PrEP & PEP

The SHC (Student Health Center) can prescribe pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for certain sexual transmitted diseases (STIs) when medically indicated. These will require an initial evaluation and office visits every 1-3 months with regular blood and other laboratory testing tests according to CDC (Centers for Disease Control) protocol. In order to provide the best care possible, we recommend patients schedule all refill appointments with the same provider.

We offer students comprehensive lab testing including:

  • Blood counts
  • Kidney, Liver, and Electrolyte levels
  • Pregnancy testing
  • HIV testing
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) screening
  • Urinalysis
  • Urine drug screening (only as part of a medical or nursing student physical)

These labs may be obtained through an appointment with an SHC provider or with a prescription from an outside provider (the latter is only provided for established patients).

Lab & Imaging Results: All normal/negative results will only be available on the MedStar portal. Providers will only alert you of abnormal results. Of note, certain lab values will appear red/abnormal but are still normal for you. If you have any questions about your lab results, please reach out to your provider in the MedStar portal.

The Student Health Center provides pre-travel consultations with our providers to review health recommendations and to obtain most recommended immunizations. In order to prepare for your visit, please have your detailed itinerary with you during the visit. If you are requesting altitude sickness prevention medicine, please have the altitudes of your destinations readily available as well.

Students should make the determination about whether their existing health insurance provides adequate coverage to pay for travel immunizations at the Student Health Center or in the Washington, DC area. We can only advise on payment coverage with the Georgetown University Student Health Insurance.

Please be advised: appointments fill up quickly due to the high number of traveling students during specific times of the year. Booking in advance is highly recommended.

Billing and Payment

SHC charges for all services provided at the clinic including virtual visits. Our billing is done through MedStar Health and we therefore take almost all health insurance that provides coverage in the Washington, DC area. We do not accept Kaiser or out of state medicaid (we do accept DC medicaid). If you have an HMO, you must designate one of our providers as your PCP to be seen and only schedule with that provider to not incur further charges. Your health insurance provider is billed first, but the student and/or parents are responsible for any charges not covered by insurance.

Students and parents should make the determination about whether their existing health insurance provides adequate coverage to pay for primary care services at the Student Health Center or in the Washington, DC area. The University in conjunction with the has arranged for a health insurance plan managed by the Student Health Insurance Office. See our Health Insurance Help page for links to more information on how health insurance works as well as specific resources for Georgetown University students

Most insurances require a small co-payment be paid at each visit. Students can make any payments by cash, check, credit card, GoCard, or Apple Pay. Every effort will be made to assist where financial hardship exists.
