Mission Statement
Mission and Values
Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) is supported by a community committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a unit of the Georgetown University Division of Student Affairs, CAPS aims to support students to live meaningful lives by strengthening mental health and fostering wellbeing.
CAPS staff strives to uphold our mission through the values outlined below:
- Commitment to the whole person: Each person has a unique context, specific capabilities, and personal aspirations. We appreciate each other’s concerns, ideas, and capabilities. We engage each other with openness and personal responsibility.
- Building mutual respect and trust: CAPS uses relationships (individual and group) to build understanding and strengthen capacities. The candor and support of our engagement advances our shared work. The richness of a diverse community includes the range of experiences and perspectives we share.
- Collaboration and partnerships: We provide optimal care and service when we work together as a CAPS team. We draw on each other’s expertise and experience to strengthen our impact. We do our best when we work together and provide support through multiple resources drawn from across Georgetown.
- Advocacy and challenge: We commit to caring for ourselves and each other, respecting the boundaries and needs of each individual. Mental health, wellbeing, and resilience are priorities for Georgetown University. Through CAPS, we advocate for students and challenge conditions, both structural and interpersonal, that impede the fostering of mental health, wellbeing, and resilience.
Diversity Mission and Goals
As mental health professionals:
- We honor and respect individuals whom we serve, and we seek to provide culturally relevant and sensitive services that help to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse campus community.
- We acknowledge the importance of valuing differences among and between one another.
- We believe it is important to educate, lend support to, and encourage discussions of difference.
- We welcome all students, including those who have not been traditionally represented in mental health care services.
- We strive to embrace diversity in all its richness across every aspect of CAPS services with the recognition that the goal of being truly diverse and inclusive is an ongoing process.
